It's a totally different and annoying problem most computer geeks experience when sitting at the computer using a computer mouse to work.

Searching for an answer to define the "cold mouse hand" syndrome, Oprah and Doctor Oz were sent an online letter. We haven't heard back from them, and if/when we do, you'll read about it here.

Here's what we wrote:

Many people may not be aware of a condition called "Cold Mouse Hand." It affects computer users who work using a computer mouse. It's not carpal tunnel and shouldn't be confused with other mouse hand medical conditions. I believe the "cold mouse hand" problem is a fairly new discovery.

I started using a computer in the early 90's, and I owned and operated an ecommerce site for over 12 years. My work required me to sit in front of a computer using the mouse. A/C offices, fans, drafts and chilly weather would cause my mouse hand to get so cold my finger tips would become numb. The only relief to the cold mouse hand was to stop working, and that was not an option. I tried pulling a sweater over my mouse hand and wear fingerless gloves to keep it warm and that didn't work. I bought computer gadgets that promised to keep the mouse hand warm, and they were either non-ergonomic, caused pain, or were too small.

In February 2007, after suffering from a cold mouse hand for many years, I decided to obtain a provisional patent for a "Mouse House Hand Warmer" to address and fix the problem. But, I was still too busy operating my business to do anything with the patent.

In May 2008, I sold my ecommerce site and decided to research the cold mouse hand problem to focus on a solution. I was surprised to discover the problem was experienced by many people.

In June 2008, I made a Mouse Hand Warmer using blanket fabric, tested the prototype, and it worked. The Mouse Hand Warmer was born! I don't suffer anymore from a cold mouse hand.

If Doctor Oz finds the mouse hand syndrome, not carpal tunnel, but the "cold mouse hand" problem, an interesting, new topic, please ask him to shed some light on this mysterious computer geeks' situation. If you look for little inventions to address new problems, I will participate by sharing the problem and the solution with your audience. Retailing: New habit of discount shopping hits all economic strata.

Desperate times call for discount measures. It's the new rule of retail, and cash-squeezed consumers are laying down the law.

An astounding number of penny-pinched shoppers are handing the industry some wake-up news this back-to-school season: Because of expensive gas and overall economic woes, consumers plan to scavenge for bargains like hustlers in a cash-flow crunch, according to two surveys out this week.

In vogue: Dollar stores, off-price discounters like Marshall's and T.J. Maxx, and comparison-shopping on the Internet. Out of vogue: Pretty much anything not on sale. Serious sale. Most shoppers plan to buy their children's pens, bookbags, clothes and other back-to-school necessities at discount stores - 73 percent, according to the National Retail Federation; 88 percent, according to Deloitte L.L.P.

Almost four in 10 will shop at dollar stores; eight in 10 will look to buy more things on sale than last year, according to Deloitte. The nation's newfound penchant for discount shopping is cutting across all economic strata, according to Deloitte's mid-July survey. One analyst said the humbler habits may be here to stay, unlike past downturns, when consumers pulled back until the storm passed.

"It's not just affecting those with less in their wallets," said Tara Weiner, managing partner of Deloitte & Touche's Greater Philadelphia office in Center City. "It's affecting just about every wallet. And it's causing a change in behaviors. It's changing how they shop."

Weiner said 61 percent of consumers polled by Deloitte said they believed the nation was in a recession, even though economists and politicians continued to duke this out. Those consumers are acting like recession shoppers, and a "structural shift" in shopping habits has set in, said Weiner, who has monitored the retail industry for 20 years.

The discount-hunting trend has emerged since last summer's implosion of the subprime-lending market and soaring crude oil prices shocked the economy and began draining consumer wallets and retail profit. A similar thing happened during the 2001 recession. Then and now, discount-shopper ranks swelled with people "trading down" from marquee stores. "People didn't go without," Weiner said, "but they were in greater search of value."

Back then, 83 percent of shoppers said they planned to do some of their holiday shopping at discount retailers - including three quarters of households with income of $75,000 or more, according to Deloitte. In 1993, only 57 percent of all households planned to shop at a discount store, Deloitte said. While conventional retailers like Macy's and a number of mall stores have struggled in this environment, dollar-store chain Dollar Tree Inc., and off-price retailers such as Marshall's and T.J. Maxx, have benefited.

Dollar Tree, which has 76 stores in the eight-county Philadelphia region, plans to open as many as 245 stores across the country this year, while other retailers have pulled back. Broker Donna Drew, of Metro Commercial Real Estate Inc., said the expanding chain has kept her busy 13 years as they've pursued store locations to meet growth goals.

"I just think people are really trying to stretch their dollar," said Drew, who also brokers lease deals for TJX Cos. Inc. - the parent company of T.J. Maxx, Marshall's and A.J. Wright. Dollar Tree reported record sales last quarter, exceeding the $1 billion mark and logging a 14.4-percent profit increase, said spokeswoman Chelle Davis. "We definitely think we are right for the times," Davis said. "Everyone likes to save money."

Dollar Tree shares closed up $1.76 yesterday to $38.07 on the Nasdaq and have risen steadily in value since January, thanks to shoppers like Sandra Harvey-White of Lansdowne, Delaware County. Harvey-White, 43, walked into a Lansdowne Dollar Tree yesterday to buy bottled water, but walked out with a shopping cart full of $1 buys - including boxes of Tastykake treats, frozen waffles, frozen pasta and Herr's potato chips.

"I always stop at the dollar store before I go to the supermarket," said the mental-health therapist, who has amped up her bargain shopping this year. "Because of the economy, I find myself making smaller trips - purchasing either what's on sale, what I can use, and not particularly the brands I used to buy."

On the clothing side of shopping, Nadine Phillips is just as devoted to the T.J. Maxx on City Avenue near Overbrook Park, in a strip near the Philadelphia and Montgomery County line. Phillips, 31, a nursing assistant who often works overtime, sneaked into the store between shifts yesterday in full nursing garb to pick up two bags of merchandise she had put on layaway. At $198, the buys were a bargain. Gone are the days, she said, of treating herself to designer duds at Macy's, which she would occasionally do before this year. Money is just too tight now. "At the other stores, I feel as though the stuff is overpriced," Phillips said. "But at T.J. Maxx, you can get the same stuff for less."

SONY is the latest company to announce the launch of a digital book reader. The Japanese electronics company is releasing its device in conjunction with high-street bookstore Waterstone’s. The SONY Reader – which will be available from September - follows hot on the heels of the iLiad Book Edition from iRex Technologies, which is available through Borders and online. Which? has reviewed the iLiad Book Edition.

However the SONY Reader costs £199, which is £200 less than the iLiad. Memory stick. The Sony Reader will come with a free CD containing 100 classic 'ebooks' and you'll be able to choose from a further 25,000 books through the Waterstone’s online store.

The Reader weighs 260g (9oz), is 8mm thin and has a 6-inch screen. It can store around 160 ebooks although this can be increased to several thousand if you use a memory stick or card. Sony says the battery will last for 6,800 page turns without recharging – or the equivalent of reading War and Peace five times over.

Survey Ranks Japanese World's Best Tourists, Americans 11th

Japanese travelers claim the title of "World's Best Tourists" in Expedia's first global tourist survey, while the British and the Germans tie for the runner-up position. Americans rank 11th.

The 2008 rankings, published by online travel company Expedia Inc., which plans to do the survey annually, are based on surveys of more than 4,000 hoteliers to determine the best overall tourists by nationality. Hoteliers were asked to rank international travelers in a variety of categories including manners, willingness to learn the language and try local cuisine, generosity and fashion savvy. Countries were scored on a 100-point scale.

"Hoteliers are the experts when it comes to interacting with tourists, so as the busy summer travel season approaches and vacationers prepare for their own travel experiences, we thought it would be fun to present some of [the hoteliers'] common perceptions regarding tourists from all around the world," said Expedia.com travel specialist Karyn Thale.

In addition to claiming the overall Best Tourists title, Japanese travelers are also named the best behaved, most polite, most quiet and least complaining tourists.

"They know what they want, and they come prepared with attractions marked in their Japanese tour books," said Polina Roze, a concierge at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Times Square in New York City. "They're very easy to accommodate, and they're very polite. They often say 'thank you' four or five times."

Hoteliers rank Americans as the international tourists most likely to try to speak in the local language and sample native cuisine. But while Americans earn points for those efforts to experience another culture fully and win the title of most generous tourists, they are also labeled the noisiest and least fashionable visitors.

Along with the Americans, the British and the French are described as culinary adventurers. And this sense of adventure extends beyond just a willingness to try local cuisine, according to Christopher Heywood, a vice president for NYC & Company, the official marketing, tourism and partnership organization for New York, which is the No. 1 destination for international visitors to the United States.

"German and British tourists seem to be a little bit more adventurous," Heywood said, citing their interest in visiting other New York boroughs in addition to Manhattan. Heywood attributes this desire to see all five of New York's boroughs - Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Staten Island and Queens - to the fact that many European tourists have visited New York City multiple times. "They've seen many of the tourist attractions and they want a real authentic experience," Heywood said.

Other notable winners in the Expedia survey include the chic French and the Italians, who claim the most fashionable prize. Roze says many international visitors, including French and Italian tourists, are eager to visit New York's designer stores. "I've noticed that a lot of visitors from Spain, Mexico, Italy and France are usually dressed very sharp, and they ask about going to stores like Juicy Couture and Century 21, a store known for discounted designer clothing."

Although international visitors to the United States have many different characteristics, some desirable and some less so, their positive effect on the United States is undeniable. "International guests are keeping us on our toes and bringing a boost to the economy," Roze said. "They're here to enjoy the city and experience New York to the fullest. They're such a positive influence on the city."

The weakness of the U.S. dollar against major world currencies doesn’t seem to be deterring Americans from traveling abroad this year, although, according to a new Visa Inc. survey, they may be heading for destinations that are somewhat closer to home.

Two-thirds of those who responded indicated that they were at least as willing to travel as they were last year, if not more so; and half of the respondents said that they would probably travel abroad during the coming year. Of the latter group, two-thirds of them noted that they were considering destinations closer to the U.S. than they had in the past.

Visa conducted the survey of 1,000 card holders in the middle of May. Those car members chosen for the survey had traveled abroad at some point during the last three years. The survey was conducted by phone, and was not limited to those who were Visa card holders.

The most popular international destination for U.S. travelers was Canada, with Mexico ranking a close second. The other top destinations included Britain, France, Italy, the Bahamas and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The rankings for 2008 are quite similar to last year’s when data was taken from Visa card holder spending rather than a survey. Canada topped the list of leading destinations in 2007 with $2.9 billion in Visa card spending, followed by Mexico, with $1.7 billion.

“While travel close to home remains strong, what’s interesting [is that] travel destinations like Western Europe and the Caribbean are still popular,” commented Paul Wilke, a spokesman for Visa.

For the first quarter of 2008, U.S. travelers spent $3.4 billion using the Visa card on visits to the top 25 destinations abroad, compared with $15 billion for all of 2007.

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday that is observed on the last Monday of May (observed in 2008 on May 26). It was formerly known as Decoration Day. This holiday commemorates U.S. men and women who have died in military service to their country. It began first to honor Union soldiers who died during the American Civil War. After World War I, it was expanded to include those who died in any war or military action. One of the longest standing traditions is the running of the Indianapolis 500, which has been held in conjunction with Memorial Day since 1911. It is also traditionally viewed as the beginning of summer by many, for many schools are dismissed around Memorial Day.

Many people observe this holiday by visiting cemeteries and memorials. A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3 p.m. US Eastern time. Another tradition is to fly the U.S. flag at half-staff from dawn until noon local time. Volunteers place a U.S. flag upon each gravesite located in a National Cemetery.

Many politicians and community leaders give speeches at community gatherings on Memorial Day.In addition to remembrance, Memorial Day is also a time for picnics, family gatherings, and sporting events. Some Americans also view Memorial Day as the unofficial beginning of summer and Labor Day as the unofficial end of the season. The national Click it or ticket campaign ramps up beginning Memorial Day weekend, noting the beginning of the most dangerous season for auto accidents and other safety related incidents. The USAF "101 Critical days of summer" begin on this day as well. Some Americans use Memorial Day to also honor any family members who have died, not just servicemen.

The VFW stated in a 2002 Memorial Day Address, "Changing the date merely to create three-day weekends has undermined the very meaning of the day. No doubt, this has contributed a lot to the general public's nonchalant observance of Memorial Day."

Following the end of the Civil War, many communities set aside a day to mark the end of the war or as a memorial to those who had died. Some of the places creating an early memorial day include Charleston, South Carolina; Boalsburg, Pennsylvania; Richmond, Virginia; Carbondale, Illinois; Columbus, Mississippi; many communities in Vermont; and some two dozen other cities and towns. These observances eventually coalesced around Decoration Day, honoring the Union dead, and the several Confederate Memorial Days.

Decoration Day, c. 1900. "You bet I'm goin' to be a soldier, too, like my Uncle David, when I grow up."According to Professor David Blight of the Yale University History Department, the first memorial day was observed in 1865 by liberated slaves at the historic race track in Charleston. The site was a former Confederate prison camp as well as a mass grave for Union soldiers who had died while captive. A parade with thousands of freed blacks and Union soldiers was followed by patriotic singing and a picnic.

The official birthplace of Memorial Day is Waterloo, New York. The village was credited with being the birthplace because it observed the day on May 5, 1866, and each year thereafter, and because it is likely that the friendship of General John Murray, a distinguished citizen of Waterloo, and General John A. Logan, who led the call for the day to be observed each year and helped spread the event nationwide, was a key factor in its growth.

General Logan had been impressed by the way the South honored their dead with a special day and decided the Union needed a similar day. Reportedly, Logan said that it was most fitting; that the ancients, especially the Greeks, had honored their dead, particularly their heroes, by chaplets of laurel and flowers, and that he intended to issue an order designating a day for decorating the grave of every soldier in the land, and if he could he would have made it a holiday.

Logan had been the principal speaker in a citywide memorial observation on April 29, 1866, at a cemetery in Carbondale, Illinois, an event that likely gave him the idea to make it a national holiday. On May 5, 1868, in his capacity as commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, a veterans' organization, Logan issued a proclamation that "Decoration Day" be observed nationwide. It was observed for the first time on May 30 of the same year; the date was chosen because it was not the anniversary of a battle. The tombs of fallen Union soldiers were decorated in remembrance of this day.

Many of the states of the U.S. South refused to celebrate Decoration Day, due to lingering hostility towards the Union Army and also because there were very few veterans of the Union Army who lived in the South. A notable exception was Columbus, Mississippi, which on April 25, 1866 at its Decoration Day commemorated both the Union and Confederate casualties buried in its cemetery.

The alternative name of "Memorial Day" was first used in 1882, but did not become more common until after World War II, and was not declared the official name by Federal law until 1967 . On June 28, 1968, the United States Congress passed the Uniform Holidays Bill, which moved three holidays from their traditional dates to a specified Monday in order to create a convenient three-day weekend and for the first time recognized Columbus Day as a federal holiday. The holidays included Washington's Birthday (which evolved into Presidents' Day), Veterans Day, and Memorial Day. The change moved Memorial Day from its traditional May 30 date to the last Monday in May. The law took effect at the federal level in 1971 . After some initial confusion and unwillingness to comply at the state level, all fifty states adopted the measure within a few years, although Veterans Day was eventually changed back to its traditional date. Ironically, most corporate businesses no longer close on Columbus Day or Veterans Day, and an increasing number are staying open on President's Day as well. The holiday has endured as one where most businesses stay closed because it marks the beginning of the "summer vacation season" (similar to neighboring Canada's Victoria Day, which occurs on the prior Monday).

Two Columnists Debate Creative Ways to Pamper Mom -- Without Breaking the Bank

A smart woman once said that when the going gets tough, the tough go shopping. This Mother's Day, the tough are likely to be shopping for gifts that can boost Mom's spirits -- without breaking the bank.

With continued trepidation about the economy, the National Retail Federation which surveys consumers about their shopping intentions, predicts consumers will spend an average of $138.63 this year, compared to $139.14 last year, with the majority of consumers investing in one major gift such as jewelry for mom, instead of several smaller gifts.

Other popular gift categories this year include the usual suspects: a special dinner or brunch, flowers, apparel and spa services. But more practical items on shoppers' lists include consumer electronics such as digital cameras, housewares and gardening tools, the retail group says.

Here are some ideas to help Mom weather these trying times in style, with comments from my colleague Alan Murray.

Jewelry: Diamonds may not be a girl's best friend now, but if you plan just one splurge on jewelry, French fashion house Hermès makes enamel bracelets in the same patterns as their silk scarves. The current collection includes the colorful classic perfume bottle pattern on a black background with gold-plated trim, $485.

Being a mom is tough in normal times, and the economic slowdown only adds to the stress. So the challenge for guys this year is to find gifts that will make her life easier, without making the hole in your budget any worse.

My colleague Laura Landro was on the right track with her at-home spa products. You can find gifts in any price range. Target even has a five-piece weekend "pamper kit" with body gel and lotion for $10.99.

Here are a few ideas that might do the trick, with comments from Laura. None of them, of course, will make up for the heavy burdens that all mothers bear in life. And thus none will fully alleviate your guilt.

E-COMMERCE STRONG; SEARCH ADVERTISING DRIVES TREND

WASHINGTON - Internet commerce continues its robust growth, defying a sluggish economy that's teetering on recession, Google's chief economist and several analysts said Friday.

Electronic commerce has grown about 22 percent in the past two years, said Hal Varian, the economist, who spoke at a forum on the state of the Internet economy at Google's new Washington office. Ed Garrubbo, chairman of the Electronic Retailing Association, said online sales jumped 17 percent in the first quarter of this year.

"The lesson here is that the economic slowdown is not an Internet slowdown," Varian said. "The Internet is looking pretty strong compared to other sectors."

Robert Atkinson, president of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, a non-partisan tech think tank, predicted continued growth for online commerce as high-speed connections increase and "the core technologies are becoming faster and cheaper."

"The absolute growth has been steady now for several years. The Internet economy is almost counter-recessional," Atkinson said. He added that comparisons with past slowdowns are difficult because this is the first downturn in which online commerce has played such a big role.

Garrubbo said traditional retailers such as Saks are experiencing a boost in online sales while other retail sales in stores are leveling off. The falling dollar is also helping online businesses attract foreign customers.

Research, he said 53 percent of all computer hardware and software sales take place online, along with 30 percent of all toys, video products and auto parts. One survey showed that two-thirds of all Internet users have bought products online.

The looming recession may actually contribute to e-commerce, Garrubbo said, because cautious consumers are doing more research and comparison shopping online before making a big purchase.

"A recession forces smarter decisions, and there's an increased desire to go online," Garrubbo said.

Michael Avon, a venture capitalist with Columbia Capital, said investments in Internet companies and start-ups have dropped off a little from last year. But he said the coming development of open platforms on mobile devices and the increasing use of social networks to sell more services and products - even $3 personalized ring tones - will create new business opportunities.

The key to much of the e-commerce boom has been the success of targeted search advertising. Google is able to closely measure consumer sentiment, Varian said, and showed data that indicated how search queries and clicks on ads reflected the downturn in real estate and the seasonal nature of car sales.

Because the impact of search advertising is more measurable than TV, radio and newspaper ads, and the coveted demographic group of twentysomethings use the Internet more than other media, spending on online advertising will start to catch up with TV ads, Avon predicted.

Atkinson sounded one cautionary note about the growth of e-commerce - that officials in Washington "still don't understand how much of a driving force information technology and the Internet are in the economy, responsible for a lot of growth."

He called personalized online ads "economic rocket fuel" that makes much of that growth possible. Atkinson warned that worthy efforts to protect consumer privacy online - now under discussion in the Federal Trade Commission and Congress - could have the unintended consequence of threatening that growth.

High style for the stroller set

Are we grooming a new generation of label-obsessed fashionistas? It would seem so. Spring is here, and with it, the must-have tot collections from Armani Junior, Dior Baby, Little Marc (as in Jacobs) are coming down the slide. Designers often outfit celebrities tiny enough to wear children's sizes, but these days more of them are clothing actual children.

Among the designer styles for kids is a 3.1 Phillip Lim shift dress ($325).

Toddler chic doesn't come cheap. Armani Junior is selling $175 tracksuits for infants. Stuart Weitzman has infant-sized flats for $65. Chloe's showing a jumper for the kindergarten set at $188. There are $106 True Religion jeans for 2-year-olds, and 3.1 Phillip Lim shift dresses for preschoolers for a cool $325.

Over the top? Of course. And yet, for kids cruising around the Back Bay in fully-loaded $1,200 Bugaboo strollers, an infant-sized $200 tie-dye dress from Burberry seems, for some affluent parents, rather reasonable.

Sure, the economy's tough. But shhhh. Don't tell the children. The high-end kiddie market hit $45 billion in 2006, according to Michael J. Silverstein, author of "Treasure Hunt: Inside the Mind of the New Consumer" and a senior partner with the Boston Consulting Group. "The baby is pretty recession proof," he wrote in an e-mail. Splurging starts with the crib and stroller and escalates into many other categories. "The mothers tell us they want their kids to get off to the right start."

Even so, Silverstein said he expects the apparel portion of the upscale children's industry to soften. But not everyone is abandoning high-end children's boutiques for JCPenney.

"I feel like you can get sweeter clothing at Bonpoint and Petite Bateau," said Back Bay mom Michele Gleason, as she pushed her sons along Newbury Street in a high-end double stroller. Both retailers have locations in the Back Bay.

This past winter Gleason bought 2-year-old Nicholas several cashmere sweaters, and on a recent morning he was wearing $100 sneakers. European, naturally. "It gives me an excuse to buy nice things for myself," Gleason said, laughing. "I have to match."

While many mothers adore dressing their kids in high style, not everyone is enthusiastic about the trend. "We're seeing the InStyle-ization of parenthood," says Pamela Paul, author of the new book, "Parenting, Inc." "The celebrity magazines have moved from wedding mania to baby mania."

Indeed, magazines such as UsWeekly and People are awash in celebrity baby fashion trivia. Last fall, OK! magazine reported that ultra-chic shoe designer Christian Louboutin was making shoes for then 18-month-old Suri Cruise, daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. Zahara Jolie-Pitt was photographed carrying a small Valentino shoulder bag, made to match one owned by her mother, Angelina Jolie.

Designer label mania may seem a threat facing only the affluent, but no one's immune to its siren song. The same shimmer of celebrity that prompts working girls to spend $2,000 on handbags they see Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Aniston carrying will make them covet whatever the tiny It girls are wearing, says Dana Thomas, author of "Deluxe: How Luxury Lost its Luster." That's if they can even get it. Zahara's bag was fashioned just for her, the fur wraps Dolce & Gabbana made for Jennifer Lopez's new twins are not available in stores.

While dropping $150 on a cashmere hoodie for a baby appalls many people, in certain circles it's seen as a cheap way for mom to get her fashion fix. "You feel a little less guilty because it's not as expensive as buying a $600 shirt for yourself," says DailyCandy.com's Katie Dick, who, as managing editor, oversees the website's six kids' editions.

But can parents let their kids be kids if they're outfitted in toddler couture? Author Paul doesn't think so. "The message any parent will send is, 'No, no, no. Don't play in mud. You may get that dress dirty,"' she says. "What does that tell them about what's more important? Openly exploring their environment, or wearing something pretty?"

Which is why many parents subscribe to this philosophy: Better an expensive outfit - even one received as a gift - should go unworn than get soiled. Indeed, the tags still hang from almost one-third of the clothing donated to Room to Grow, a Boston and New York-based nonprofit that provides parents with support and baby supplies, reports the organization's Audrey Becker.

"We get lots of French clothing, lots of Burberry, Petit Bateau."

Though the thought about going without might seem grim at first, there is a silver lining when it comes to shopping. Just because you have less to spend on fashion doesn't mean you have to stop trying completely, following is a list of tips that help the budget fashionista in all of us keep looking fabulous.

Clothing
I thought starting off with the most obvious wardrobe item was a good way to kick off the list especially since a lot of us have already started thinking of spring wear, plus shopping for clothing on a budget is often the easiest. Although no one likes to worry about the economy, one positive result is retailers know that consumers are holding onto their money tighter than before, so they are more willing to hold sales and make higher decreases to entice consumers to spend. Here's a great way to take advantage of dropping prices but still come out with the stuff you want:

Be a savvy sale shopper: I already mentioned how you might notice more sales and promotions from retailers in an effort to boast slow profits, so as a savvy shopper it pays off to know when your favorite store is holding a 'secret sale' (join a mailing list or befriend the sales staff to become a VIP), end-of-season sales (household names like Banana Republic and Macys hold seasonal sales where items are 40% off), watch for the buy-one-get-one-half off type of coupon sales because you can buy the non-sale item you've been eyeing and get another item half off.

Shop online: Even the most experienced shopper can find it daunting to keep up with the sale schedule at their favorite stores which is why shopping online has become so popular. Gone were the days where you weren't sure of your size or if something looked good, most online shops allow for easy returns. Vintage: If the thought of secondhand shops scares you than you haven't been shopping at the right vintage store. Vintage can be ultra-hip and you'll be surprised to see what you find in the right vintage store. Make sure to find one that offers items in good condition and reasonable prices (some are actually expensive) and go hunting for shift dresses, capris and 50's style blouses that have been seen in all the fashion magazines. Online: There are a ton of online sites selling only footwear and it's sometimes hard to go through them all but the one good thing about so many choices is that there is more competition which means that price points will be lower. We haven't found a ton of online sites that we like to shop at for shoes because we tend to shop for more high end brands (goes back to that investment thinking) and there aren't a lot of sites that sell expensive shoes but one place I have found luck at saving money is eBay (yes, eBay). I would never purchase a designer handbag from eBay because there is no way to guarantee that you are actually getting an authentic designer handbag but shoes are less likely to be knocked off. But be prepared to search often because the selection is limited however you can find some amazing deals (brand new Lanvin flats for $200 or Prada heels for $100). So brush up on your bidding war skills because wining a pair of Manola Blanik Mary Janes is harder than actually walking in them.

Sales: Like clothes and designer accessories, the best and easiest way to save money is to know when your favorite shoe store is having a sale, but the early bird gets the worm in shoes sales because if there is one thing women have in common its shoes.

So although a slow economy can be a huge drain on your wallet, just remember that looking good doesn't have to suffer a recession as well. Become an experienced (and smart) shopper and you'll ride out tough times with the shirt on your back.
